You Charged ₦500k Per Day Don’t Be Surprised They Shot 20 Scenes.

0:00 0:00

I recently watched a short interview clip of actress Sunshine Rosman. She talked about something that sparked strong reactions.

Her point? Acting for YouTube films is affecting actors’ health because productions are shooting over 20 scenes in a single day.

Many people agreed with her immediately.

And I understand why.

On the surface, it sounds like a clear case of production companies overworking their cast.

But I think Sunshine isn’t being completely honest about the full picture.

Because the real question isn’t whether actors are being overworked.

The real question is: Why are production companies rushing to shoot 20 scenes a day in the first place?

The Daily Rate Problem

Most A-list actors in Nollywood charge daily rates for YouTube films:

· Between ₦150k and ₦300k per day for most

· Prominent trending names charge as high as ₦500k per day

Now do the math.

If a producer brings in an actor at ₦500k per day and plans to use them for 4 days, that’s ₦2 million on that one actor alone.

And we haven’t even started talking about equipment, welfare, logistics, hotel accommodation, feeding, and every other production cost.

So ask yourself: What does a producer naturally do when they are paying ₦500k per day?

They try to get maximum value out of every single hour.

They push to shoot as many scenes as possible within those hours because every day that passes is ₦500k walking out of their small pocket.

Who Created This Situation?

When Sunshine talks about actors being overworked on YouTube sets, we also need to be honest about who created that situation in the first place.

The daily rate structure is the root of the problem.

When you charge a producer per day, you hand them a direct financial incentive to squeeze every possible scene into every hour they are paying for.

You have given them no reason to pace the production properly because slowing down costs them money.

He who comes to equity must come with clean hands.

You cannot charge a producer per day and then be surprised when they want to make the most of every hour they are paying for.

Nne, it is not wickedness. Na basic business logic.

The YouTube Market Reality

We must also remember the nature of the YouTube market itself.

Every producer pushing a film on that platform knows they may not recover their investment. There is no 100% guaranteed return.

So the objective from day one is:

· Cut costs

· Manage potential losses in case the film does not perform

That is the reality driving these decisions on set.

The Solution Is Not Complicated:

If actors go back to charging per project instead of per day, this problem will reduce significantly.

· When an actor charges for the entire project upfront, the producer no longer has a financial reason to rush.

· The pressure of the daily clock disappears entirely.

· The production can then be planned properly with realistic shooting schedules that protect the cast and crew.

Beyond that, actors should negotiate the number of shooting days before they agree to take on any project.

Final Word:

Sunshine Rosman raised a point worth discussing.

But the conversation she started is incomplete.

The overworking problem on YouTube sets is real. But it did not come from nowhere.

Actors handed producers that power the moment they chose to charge per day instead of per project.

And it’s not only the day pay it’s high daily pay.

Until that changes, there is a producer somewhere in VGC who has made a 3-day down payment for a service apartment and he will squeeze 30 scenes from you per day.
