“A Legend Falls: Veteran Nigerian Singer Johnson Adjan Passes Away at 82 After Stroke Battle”
It’s a sad season for Nigerian music lovers. Another iconic voice has gone silent.
Veteran Urhobo singer Professor Johnson Adjan, fondly called Ogburine (Song Warrior), has passed away at 82. He died after a long battle with stroke complications and a prostate condition.
For over five decades, Adjan wasn’t just an entertainer he was a walking archive of Urhobo culture. His songs were rich with proverbs, myths, and deep wisdom. Many who danced to his beats as children later realized they’d been learning philosophy all along.
In May 2025, his family had assured fans his health was improving, thanks to a fundraising campaign by loved ones. But on June 15, 2026, the legend took his final bow.
Professor Sunny Awhefeada, Vice-Chancellor of Southern Delta University, described Adjan’s music as a guide that helped many understand the Urhobo worldview. Fans now say his death marks the end of an era.
Born on January 2, 1944, in Delta State, Adjan leaves behind a legacy of cultural preservation through melody.
