Kylian Mbappe Makes History: Shatters French Goal Records in World Cup Opener.

The French captain now stands alone as his country's greatest goalscorer after a stunning performance against Senegal.

When Kylian Mbappe stepped onto the pitch in East Rutherford on Tuesday, few could have predicted just how historic the night would become. By the time the final whistle blew on France's 3-1 victory over Senegal, the 27-year-old had cemented his legacy as one of football's all time greats.

With two goals in the Group I opener, Mbappe didn't just help secure three crucial points for the defending champions he rewrote the record books.

A Night of Milestones.

The first moment of history came quietly enough. When Mbappe slotted home Michael Olise's brilliant pass in the 66th minute, it broke the deadlock in a match that had seen France struggle through a frustrating first half. But more importantly, that goal pushed him past Olivier Giroud to become France's all-time leading scorer with 58 international goals.

In a poetic twist, Giroud was in the commentary box calling the match. When Mbappe added his second in the 96th minute a thunderous strike from long range Giroud was there to congratulate his successor live on air.

But the records didn't stop there.

World Cup Greatness

Mbappe also eclipsed Just Fontaine's legendary record of 13 World Cup goals, all scored in 1958. With 14 goals now to his name, he sits just two behind Miroslav Klose's all-time World Cup record of 16. Only Brazil's Ronaldo (15 goals) now stands between Mbappe and the top spot.

He's also the youngest player ever to reach 14 World Cup goals, and the only player to have scored at three consecutive World Cups. Add to that his distinction of being the sole player with two or more goals in five different World Cup matches.

A History of Stardom

This is nothing new for Mbappe. He burst onto the global stage at just 19, helping France win the 2018 World Cup in Russia. His goal against Peru that year made him France's youngest ever World Cup scorer, and he became only the second teenager after Pelé to score in a World Cup final.

Even in defeat in 2022, Mbappe made history, scoring a hat trick in the final against Argentina only the second time that feat has been achieved in a World Cup final, following England's Geoff Hurst in 1966.

Focused on the Team

Despite the personal glory, Mbappe kept his focus on the bigger picture. "Always important to start with a win," he wrote on Instagram after the match. "It will be a long road, but we are ready."

With Iraq next in Philadelphia, the football world will be watching to see if he can chase down Klose's record and lead France deeper into the tournament.
