ISTANBUL — Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen found himself at the centre of controversy after a heated confrontation with Villarreal defender Santiago Mouriño during Galatasaray's preseason friendly against Villarreal on August 8.

The incident occurred when Osimhen made a run into the penalty area and Mouriño moved across him, using his body to block the striker's movement.

Osimhen immediately reacted angrily.

The Nigerian striker turned toward Mouriño and confronted him before removing his protective face mask. The situation quickly became physical when Osimhen shoved the Villarreal defender, sending him to the ground.

Galatasaray teammates rushed over to separate the players and prevent the confrontation from escalating further.

Referee Kadir Sağlam intervened and showed both Osimhen and Mouriño yellow cards.

The incident has generated debate among football supporters. Some argue that Mouriño's physical challenge provoked Osimhen, while others believe the Galatasaray forward should have maintained his composure rather than responding physically.

Villarreal coach Íñigo Pérez was particularly critical of the incident, accusing Galatasaray of approaching the friendly with an overly aggressive attitude.

Former Nigeria international Osaze Odemwingie, however, offered some support for Osimhen, suggesting that the striker may have been provoked while also acknowledging that he needs to control his temper.

Despite the controversy, Osimhen reportedly escaped any further disciplinary punishment after the referee dealt with the incident during the match.

The episode has nevertheless renewed discussion about the Nigerian striker's fiery temperament and whether his passion and aggression sometimes cross the line.
