World Cup: Messi creates two records after Argentina’s 2-1 win over England

Argentina captain, Lionel Messi, on Wednesday, created two records after his side’s World Cup semi-final 2-1 win against England.

Anthony Gordon gave England the lead in the 55th minute of the encounter, thanks to Morgan Rogers’ assist.

Argentina equalized in the 85th minute of the encounter through Enzo Fernandez, thanks to Messi’s assist.

Lionel Scaloni’s side then scored a late goal through Lautaro Martinez’s header, thanks to another assist from Messi.

However, according to OptaJoe, Messi completed nine dribbles and assisted two goals against England to become the first player on record (from 1966) to do so in a single FIFA World Cup knockout game.

Also, the 39-year-old forward now has 12 assists in FIFA World Cup matches, 10 of which have come in knockout rounds.

No other player on record (from 1966) has more than eight in total at the finals.
