A Decade of Legacy: 10th Chief Nkwoji Memorial Golf Tournament Tees Off Today in Aba.
The air at the Aba Sports Club 1926 Golf Section is thick with anticipation today as the 10th edition of the Chief Mike Nkworji (OKPATAOZUORA) Memorial Golf Tournament gets underway. What started as a tribute to a beloved philanthropist has now become a landmark event on Nigeria's golfing calendar, and today, it celebrates a decade of honoring a man whose impact went far beyond the fairways.
Over 200 amateur and professional golfers from across the country and beyond have gathered in Abia State to swing their clubs in memory of the late Chief Nkwoji. The action actually kicked off yesterday with the Ladies Handicap 29-36 and Professional categories, but the main event tees off today between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m., promising a day of fierce but friendly competition.
But this tournament is about more than just birdies and eagles. It’s a living tribute to a man described as a philanthropist and "exemplary humanist." Chief Nkwoji wasn’t just a name on a trophy; he was a pillar of the club, instrumental in building the greens and the magnificent clubhouse that members enjoy today. His spirit lives on not just in the tournament, but in the ongoing generosity of his family. His wife, Iyom Ongodi, and son, Obi—both avid golfers themselves—are among the participants, carrying his torch both on and off the green.
The family has ensured his legacy continues to grow. From donating motorized tractors to building a caddy house with a food vendors court, their annual sponsorship of this tournament is just one facet of their continued philanthropy.
"This tournament is our way of celebrating his legacy and giving back to the golf community," the organizers shared. "He was the sponsor of hole number one, and his fingerprints are all over this club. We’re proud to keep his memory alive."
As the sun climbs over the course, players will battle it out in various categories. The day’s excitement will culminate in the symbolic and celebratory "Hole 19" event at 3 p.m., followed by the presentation of trophies and prizes to the winners.
For the golfing community in Aba and beyond, today isn't just about a game it's about remembering a great man, fostering sportsmanship, and watching a legacy continue to unfold.
