Governor Alex Otti reassures youth corps members of better facilities and security during their service year in Abia State.

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has promised to keep improving conditions at the NYSC orientation camp, ensuring that corps members posted to the state feel safe and comfortable throughout their service year.

The Governor made this commitment on Monday during the swearing in ceremony for 1,584 corps members who are part of the 2026 Batch 'B' Stream I. The event took place at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Umunna, Bende Local Government Area.

Speaking through his Deputy, Ikechukwu Emetu, Governor Otti described the young graduates as "ambassadors of hope" who would help strengthen national unity and contribute to development at the grassroots level.

Upgrades Coming to Camp Facilities:

The Governor announced that the second phase of renovations at the camp would soon begin. This includes upgrading hostels and staff quarters, as well as building a new standard parade ground.

"These upgrades are geared towards ensuring you have a conducive environment to learn, grow, and develop the skills needed to excel during and after service," Otti said.

Encouragement to Learn Business Skills:

The Governor urged the corps members to take the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme seriously, noting that it aligns with Abia State's focus on innovation and self reliance.

"With a N77,000 monthly allowance, plus additional stipends from some Places of Primary Assignment (PPAs), I encourage you to imbibe a savings culture and leverage NYSC business funding opportunities to start small scale enterprises," he advised.

Strong Warning Against Social Vices:

Governor Otti also warned the corps members to stay away from cultism, drug abuse, and other harmful behaviours, stating that security agencies would deal firmly with anyone caught.

He further advised them to avoid night journeys and unauthorized trips, following NYSC safety guidelines.

"Abia is known for peace and hospitality. I urge you to respect our culture, shun tribalism, and foster unity wherever you are posted," he added.

NYSC Coordinator's Remarks:

Earlier, the NYSC state Coordinator, Yunusa Tanimu, confirmed that 1,584 corps members 680 males and 904 females were successfully registered for the orientation course.

Tanimu commended Governor Otti for his consistent support, especially for renovating corps lodges, improving camp feeding, and providing logistics support. He also appealed for additional help in furnishing the new NYSC state secretariat and completing the multipurpose hall at the camp.

Addressing the corps members, Tanimu said, "Since your arrival, you have displayed discipline, resilience, and enthusiasm. I urge you to sustain this spirit, participate actively in all camp activities, and take your service year as an opportunity for self discovery and national impact."

The oath of allegiance was administered by the state Chief Judge, Justice Lilian Abai, represented by Justice Chido Nwakama.
