Canada Stuns the World with Historic 6-0 Blowout of Qatar for First-Ever World Cup Win.
In a match that will be remembered for generations, Canada finally broke through for its first ever World Cup victory and they did it in spectacular fashion.
Playing in front of a roaring home crowd in Vancouver, the Canadians put on a clinic Thursday afternoon, dismantling a nine man Qatar squad 6-0 in Group B action. The win gives Canada four points in the tournament after they opened with a hard fought draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The hero of the day? Jonathan David, who delivered a hat trick that sent BC Place into absolute delirium. His first came in the 29th minute when he pounced on a loose ball off Tajon Buchanan's shot and hammered it past Qatari keeper Mahmoud Abunada. Then, deep into first-half stoppage time, David was in the right place at the right time again, knocking home a rebound off Cyle Larin's saved header to make it 3-0. He capped his hat trick in the final moments of second half stoppage time, putting an exclamation mark on a day Canada will never forget.
Cyle Larin had opened the scoring in the 16th minute, and Nathan Saliba added another in the 64th. To make matters worse for Qatar, they also gifted Canada an own goal from Mohamed Manai in the 75th.
On the other side of the pitch, Canadian keeper Maxime Crepeau had an unusually quiet afternoon he didn't face a single shot on target.
The match wasn't without its tense moments, though. Canadian midfielder Ismael Kone was stretchered off in the 51st minute with what appeared to be a serious lower left leg injury after a heavy challenge from Qatar's Assim Madibo, who was shown a red card. That came after Homam Ahmed was also sent off earlier in the first half, leaving Qatar with just nine men for much of the match.
Both teams will wrap up Group B play on Wednesday, with Canada taking on Switzerland in Vancouver and Qatar facing Bosnia and Herzegovina in Seattle.
For a country that had never won a World Cup match in seven previous tries, this wasn't just a win it was a statement.
