Cult Rivalry Turns Deadly in Osun: Two Undergraduates Feared Killed in Violent Night Attack in Ede.
A wave of tension has gripped the Ede area of Osun State following a brutal late-night attack on a group of undergraduates, reportedly linked to a renewed cult rivalry that has left at least two students dead and several others critically injured.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday night in an off-campus student residence, has once again raised concerns over rising cult-related violence in tertiary institutions and surrounding communities in the state.
Night Attack Leaves Students in Bloodshed
According to eyewitness accounts and a police source familiar with the incident, about six students were inside their apartment when suspected cultists stormed the residence in what appeared to be a coordinated revenge mission.
The attackers reportedly forced their way into the apartment under the cover of darkness and immediately unleashed violence on the occupants using dangerous weapons. The assault reportedly lasted several minutes before the attackers fled the scene, leaving behind a trail of blood and panic.
“The attack occurred at night. The students were inside when the assailants broke in and started attacking them with dangerous weapons,” a police source disclosed, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.
The source added that the victims sustained varying degrees of injuries, with two of the students later dying as a result of the severity of their wounds. Others were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.
Cult Rivalry Suspected
Preliminary investigations suggest that the attack may be connected to an ongoing feud between rival cult groups in the area. Security sources believe the violence is part of a cycle of reprisals that has recently intensified around student-populated communities in Ede.
An anti-cultism advocacy platform, Naija Confra, also reported that two students had been confirmed dead, alleging that the attack was carried out by suspected members of the Aye confraternity targeting individuals linked to a rival Buccaneer group.
The platform further claimed that one individual identified as “Dara” was allegedly tracked to the residence before the attack, sparking a wider confrontation involving multiple occupants of the apartment.
According to the platform’s account, key members of the rival group were present during the attack, including individuals described as holding leadership positions within the confraternity structure. It further alleged that several occupants remain in critical condition.
However, these claims have not been independently verified by security agencies.
Police Confirm Incident, Give Different Casualty Figure
Confirming the development, the spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, stated that the command had received reports of a cult-related clash in the area.
According to him, one person was confirmed dead in the incident, while investigations were ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the attack and identify those responsible.
“Suspected cultists had a clash on Tuesday, and one person was killed. Investigation is ongoing,” Ojelabi said.
The discrepancy in casualty figures between police reports and other accounts has further deepened uncertainty about the true scale of the attack.
Fear and Tension in Student Community
The incident has reportedly left students in the Ede axis in fear, with many expressing concern over their safety in off-campus accommodations, which are often poorly secured and vulnerable to attacks.
Residents say cult-related violence has become an increasing concern in student communities, where rival groups allegedly clash over influence, territory, and internal disputes.
Security operatives are said to have intensified surveillance in the area as investigations continue, with authorities expected to clamp down on suspected cult activities in the coming days.
Investigation Ongoing
The police have assured the public that a full investigation is underway to unravel the circumstances behind the attack, identify the perpetrators, and prevent further escalation.
Meanwhile, the community remains on edge as students and residents await clarity on what security officials describe as another tragic episode in the ongoing battle against cult violence in the region.
