Jim Ovia Retires as Zenith Bank Chairman After 12 Years, Mustafa Bello Appointed Successor
Zenith Bank has formally announced the retirement of its founder and long-serving Group Chairman, Jim Ovia, marking the end of a significant era in the institution’s leadership.
The announcement was made on Tuesday during the bank’s 35th Annual General Meeting (AGM), where shareholders and stakeholders gathered to review the bank’s performance and strategic direction. The development was also confirmed in an official statement released by the bank, outlining the reasons behind Ovia’s departure and the transition plan put in place.
According to the statement, Ovia stepped down following the completion of the maximum tenure allowed for non-executive directors and chairpersons, as stipulated by corporate governance guidelines issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria. The guidelines limit such roles to a total of 12 years, a policy aimed at promoting accountability, transparency, and periodic leadership renewal within financial institutions.
Ovia, who assumed the role of Chairman on July 16, 2014, returned to the position after an earlier distinguished tenure as the bank’s founder and Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer from 1990 to 2010. His leadership journey with Zenith Bank spans more than three decades, during which he played a pivotal role in transforming the institution from a startup into one of Nigeria’s most prominent and respected banking brands.
During his time as chairman, the bank credited Ovia with providing strong leadership, clear strategic direction, and effective oversight of board activities. Under his guidance, Zenith Bank consolidated its position as a top-tier financial institution, expanded its footprint across key markets, and strengthened its reputation for corporate governance and operational excellence.
In its tribute, the board of directors expressed profound gratitude for Ovia’s contributions, describing his tenure as impactful and visionary. The statement highlighted his unwavering commitment to best practices in governance, his deep understanding of regulatory frameworks, and his ability to guide the bank through evolving economic and financial landscapes.
“The Board expresses its deep appreciation to Mr. Jim Ovia for his outstanding service and invaluable contributions. His visionary leadership, unwavering commitment to good governance, and dedication to stakeholder value creation significantly strengthened the Group’s strategic positioning and reputation during his tenure,” the statement read.
It further emphasized Ovia’s extensive experience across both executive and board-level leadership, noting his integrity, independence, and sound judgment as defining qualities that shaped the bank’s decision-making processes and long-term growth.
As part of its succession plan, the board announced that it had approved the appointment of Mustafa Bello as the new Group Chairman. The decision was reached at a board meeting held on April 27, ahead of the AGM, to ensure a smooth and orderly transition of leadership.
Bello, a seasoned engineer and experienced board member, joined Zenith Bank’s board on December 29, 2017. He is currently the longest-serving director on the board, bringing with him years of institutional knowledge and familiarity with the bank’s strategic priorities and governance structure.
The bank expressed confidence that Bello’s appointment would provide continuity and stability, maintaining the high standards of corporate governance established under Ovia’s leadership. It also noted that his experience and insight would be instrumental in steering the bank through its next phase of growth and innovation.
Zenith Bank concluded by assuring stakeholders that the leadership transition has been carefully managed to ensure minimal disruption to operations, while positioning the institution for sustained success in Nigeria’s dynamic financial sector.
