England's Golden Chance? Your Complete Guide to the 2026 World Cup.

0:00 0:00

The biggest tournament in football history is finally here 48 teams, 16 stadiums, three host nations, and one trophy

The wait is over. The 2026 World Cup kicks off on Thursday, June 11, when Mexico faces South Africa at 8pm BST in Mexico City, following an opening ceremony 90 minutes before kick-off. The final takes place on Sunday, July 19 in New Jersey (8pm BST).

For the first time, three countries are hosting: the USA, Mexico, and Canada. Sixteen stadiums will stage matches 11 in the US, three in Mexico, and two in Canada.

Key dates at a glance

· Group stage: June 11-27

· Round of 32: June 28 – July 3

· Round of 16: July 4-7

· Quarter-finals: July 9-11

· Semi-finals: July 14-15

· Third-place play-off: July 18

· Final: July 19

New format, new faces

This is the first World Cup featuring 48 teams (up from 32). The format now includes 12 groups of four, with the top two sides plus the eight best ranked third placed teams advancing to a round of 32 adding an extra knockout round.

Four nations are making their World Cup debuts: Cape Verde, Curacao, Jordan, and Uzbekistan the highest number of newcomers since 2006.

Notable absentees include Italy, Nigeria, Cameroon, China, and India. Russia remains suspended indefinitely.

Favourites, underdogs & Golden Boot race.

According to Sky Bet, France and Spain are joint favourites at 9/2, followed by England (13/2), Brazil (8/1), and defending champions Argentina (10/1).

Golden Boot favourite: Kylian Mbappé (11/2), with Harry Kane second at 13/2.

Longest odds: Haiti, Cape Verde, Curacao, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq have less than a 0.1% chance of winning, per Opta.

Can Messi and Ronaldo finally meet?

Remarkably, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have never faced each other at a World Cup. If both Argentina and Portugal win their groups, they could meet in the quarter finals. Different group finishes could see them clash in the round of 16 or only in the final.

Weather, VAR & substitutions

· Heat concerns: 14 of 16 venues could reach dangerous conditions; only three stadiums have air conditioning

· VAR expanded: Now covers incorrectly awarded second yellow cards, corners, mistaken identity, and offences before set-pieces

· Five substitutions (six if extra time); substituted players must exit within 10 seconds

England headlines

Thomas Tuchel left out several high profile players including Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, Trent Alexander Arnold, and Harry Maguire. England's group matches: Croatia (June 17, 9pm), Ghana (June 23, 9pm), Panama (June 27, 10pm).

Prize money & tickets

Winners receive **$50m (£37.4m)** a 50% increase from previous tournaments. FIFA's total revenue for 2026 is expected to reach approximately $9bn. One resale ticket for the final was listed at an astonishing $11.5m.

Can Argentina become the first team since Brazil (1962) to win back to back World Cups? Or will England finally end 60 years of hurt? With 48 teams, extreme heat, a new knockout format, and the planet's biggest stars on show, this promises to be the most unpredictable World Cup yet.
