Real Madrid followed through on president Florentino Perez’s re-election promise and made a huge €150 million (£129 million) offer for Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez. But Atletico turned them down flat.

The bid was officially announced on Madrid’s website after Perez won another term early Monday morning. However, Atletico thanked them for the proposal but politely rejected it, pointing to Alvarez’s release clause instead.

The Argentine striker isn’t just on Real’s radar Barcelona also see him as a top target after recently signing Anthony Gordon to boost their attack. Tensions have been rising between Atletico and Barca, with Atletico accusing Barcelona of running a smear campaign amid the transfer speculation.

For now, Alvarez stays in red and white, but the battle for his signature looks far from over.
