The Osun State Government has declared Wednesday, June 17, 2026, as a public holiday in celebration of Hijrah 1448AH, marking the commencement of the Islamic New Year.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Hon. Aderibigbe Kayode Rasheed, and made available to journalists on Tuesday.

According to the commissioner, the state government felicitated with Muslim faithful across Osun and prayed for continued peace, unity and prosperity in the state as the new Islamic calendar year begins.

He urged residents to avoid actions capable of causing division or discord and instead embrace activities that encourage harmony, peaceful coexistence and communal unity during the celebrations.

Hijrah marks the historic migration of Prophet Muhammad from Makkah to Madinah, an event regarded as the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar.
