Isak & Gyokeres Run Riot as Sweden Destroy Tunisia 5-1 in World Cup Opener.

Sweden couldn’t have asked for a better start to their World Cup campaign. In their Group F opener in Monterrey, they thrashed Tunisia 5-1, with strikers Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres putting on a show.

The first goal came just seven minutes in. Brighton’s Yasin Ayari punished some sloppy Tunisian defending with a beautiful strike into the top corner. At 22, he became Sweden’s youngest World Cup scorer since 1990. He chose not to celebrate out of respect for his father’s homeland.

Liverpool’s Alexander Isak, making his World Cup debut, made it 2-0 in the 30th minute. After some brilliant hold-up play from Arsenal’s Viktor Gyokeres, Isak drove in from the left and smashed the ball into the far corner.

Just before half time, Tunisia gave themselves a lifeline. Omar Rekik rose highest to head home a Hannibal Mejbri free kick to make it 2-1.

But any hope of a comeback was killed off after the break. On the hour mark, Isak turned provider, setting up Gyokeres to restore Sweden’s two goal lead. Then came a piece of history: 24 minutes later, substitute Mattias Svanberg scored just 12 seconds after coming on the fastest goal by a substitute in World Cup history.

To cap things off, Ayari added his second of the night with another long range rocket. Final score: Sweden 5-1 Tunisia. Graham Potter’s side go top of the group in style.
