LASU Celebrates Record-Breaking 494 First-Class Graduates as 20,604 Students Set to Graduate.

Lagos State University makes history with impressive academic performance across two academic sessions.

Lagos State University is gearing up for what promises to be a historic moment in its academic calendar. The institution will be awarding degrees to a staggering 20,604 students at its combined 29th and 30th convocation ceremonies, covering the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 academic sessions.

What's turning heads is the impressive number of First-Class graduates emerging from the university. A total of 494 students from first-degree programmes have achieved this prestigious honour 262 from the 2024/2025 session and 232 from the 2025/2026 session.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, shared these figures during a press conference on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, where she outlined the schedule of events for the upcoming ceremonies.

Breaking Down the Numbers;

Let's look at the bigger picture. In the 2024/2025 session, 7,621 students completed their first-degree programmes. Beyond the First Class achievers, the breakdown shows:

· 3,155 students earned Second Class Upper Division

· 3,439 secured Second Class Lower Division

· 622 graduated with Third Class

· 37 received passes

· 106 students in MBBS and BDS programmes earned unclassified degrees

The 2025/2026 session saw 8,653 students complete their first-degree programmes:

· 3,545 with Second Class Upper Division

· 4,157 with Second Class Lower Division

· 678 with Third Class

· 31 with passes

Postgraduate Achievements;

The university isn't just celebrating undergraduates. A total of 3,383 postgraduate students will also be honoured across both sessions, including:

· 618 Postgraduate Diploma graduates

· 1,508 academic Master's graduates

· 900 professional Master's graduates

· 238 PhD graduates

· 119 professional doctoral graduates

Meet the Stars;

Two exceptional students have emerged as the best graduating students for their respective sessions. Ayilara Lawal Olawale from the Department of Project Management topped the 2024/2025 cohort with an outstanding CGPA of 4.96. Not to be outdone, Adebanjo Samuel Oluolamide from the Department of Aerospace Engineering achieved an even more impressive CGPA of 4.97 for the 2025/2026 session. Both earned First Class Honours.

Honour and Recognition;

The convocation will also see the university confer honorary Doctor of Business degrees on distinguished Nigerians, including business magnate Aliko Dangote, Mr Akin Kekere-Ekun, and Mrs Harriet-Ann Omobola Adesola.

Professors Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello and Rafiu Olaoluwa Okuneye will also be elevated to the rank of Distinguished Professor, recognising their significant contributions to academia.

A Bittersweet Moment;

The Vice-Chancellor described this convocation as particularly meaningful, noting it would be her last in that role. She also shared some exciting institutional milestones, including:

· Approval of 17 new academic programmes by the National Universities Commission

· Over 84,000 first-choice UTME applications in 2026, making LASU Nigeria's most subscribed university for the second year running

· Two students winning back to back N50 million venture capital grants in a national competition

· Approval of a N3 billion TETFund Centre of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Cyber Sciences

· Construction beginning on a N4 billion 1,500-bed hostel

Convocation Schedule;

The celebrations kick off with pre-convocation activities, including a staff sports competition and the university's first Staff Celebration Day. Engineering and Agricultural Sciences degrees will be conferred on August 17 at the Epe Campus, while other faculties will receive their degrees on August 18 at the Ojo campus. Professional and academic doctorate degrees, alongside honorary doctorates, will follow on August 19.
