Liverpool’s Summer Shopping List: Wingers, a Right Back, and a Midfield Rethink.
Liverpool are gearing up for a busy summer, and it looks like their top priority is rebuilding the attack with two new wingers on the wish list to eventually fill the gap left by Mohamed Salah. The name at the top of that list? 19 year old Yan Diomande, who’s already turning heads at the World Cup with Ivory Coast. But he won’t come cheap RB Leipzig are demanding over £86 million and plenty of other clubs are circling.
What makes Diomande so appealing is his ability to play on either flank. That kind of flexibility is exactly what new boss Andoni Iraola wants as he reshapes the forward line giving him more tactical options and cover if injuries hit, unlike his predecessor.
At the back, right back is a real headache. Conor Bradley’s knee injury in January left them thin, and last summer’s signing, Jeremie Frimpong, hasn’t nailed down the spot. Joe Gomez’s future is also up in the air, adding more uncertainty.
Centre back, though? Not a panic zone despite Ibrahima Konaté leaving. They’ve already brought in Jeremy Jacquet for £60 million and have young Giovanni Leoni back from an ACL injury. That said, both lack Premier League experience, so don’t be surprised if they dip back into the market later. A versatile option like Gomez who can cover both centre back and right back would be ideal.
Left back could sort itself out if Kostas Tsimikas impresses after his loan at Roma, potentially easing the need to replace the departing Andy Robertson.
Midfield wise, Ryan Gravenberch stepping up as a No. 6 under Arne Slot last season pushed a holding midfielder down the priority list. But the team’s performances this year have shown they probably need more steel there after all.
One thing’s for sure Iraola is giving everyone a fresh start. That’s great news for squad players like Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott, who’ll be hoping to prove themselves all over again.
