Mistaken Identity Sparks Panic in Ogun Community as Mob Detains Two Policemen Returning From Duty.
(Near-Tragedy in Ogun; Lost Mobile Police Officers Detained by Mob in Case of Mistaken Identity.)
A tense situation unfolded in the Kanuyi area of Simawa, Ogun State, after two serving officers of the Nigeria Police Force were mistakenly identified as kidnappers and briefly detained by an angry mob before being rescued by law enforcement authorities.
The incident, which could have escalated into a deadly case of jungle justice, occurred after the officers—members of the Police Mobile Force—lost their way while returning from an official assignment in Sagamu. Their movement through the community, however, triggered suspicion among some residents who believed they were armed criminals operating in the area.
According to a statement issued on Monday by the Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the misunderstanding quickly spiraled as more community members gathered at the scene, leading to the unlawful detention and public humiliation of the officers.
How the Incident Unfolded
Preliminary accounts indicate that the officers were travelling back to their base in Lagos State after completing a national duty assignment in Sagamu when they became disoriented and inadvertently entered the Kanuyi community.
Their presence reportedly raised alarm among some residents, who, amid heightened fears of kidnapping incidents in parts of the state and across the country, assumed they were criminals. In response, an agitated crowd surrounded the officers, restrained them, and subjected them to a search.
Despite their attempts to identify themselves, the situation escalated further as some members of the public recorded videos and took photographs of the officers, later circulating them on social media with captions wrongly labelling them as suspected kidnappers.
Police Intervention and Rescue
The Ogun State Police Command said it received a distress report from the Simawa Division around 11:00 a.m. on June 1, 2026, alerting officers that two suspected criminals had been apprehended by residents of the community.
Acting swiftly on the report, police operatives were deployed to the scene where they discovered that the individuals in question were not criminals but serving police officers attached to a Police Mobile Force Squadron based in Lagos State.
The officers were immediately rescued from the crowd and taken into protective custody for proper identification and investigation.
Subsequent verification by the Command confirmed their identities through official police identity cards, deployment documents, uniforms, and other service-related credentials. Their parent unit also authenticated them as duly serving officers engaged in lawful duties.
Avoidance of a Potential Tragedy
Police authorities noted that although the officers escaped physical harm, the situation subjected them to unnecessary public embarrassment, emotional distress, and reputational risk due to misinformation that spread rapidly online.
The Command described the incident as a clear example of how fear and misinformation can quickly escalate into dangerous situations, especially in communities already on edge due to security concerns.
Warning Against Jungle Justice and Misinformation
While commending residents for being vigilant, the Ogun State Police Command strongly cautioned against mob action and jungle justice, stressing that such practices often lead to the victimisation of innocent individuals.
It warned that in today’s digital age, false assumptions can be amplified within minutes on social media, potentially endangering lives and undermining public trust in security institutions.
The Command urged members of the public to always allow security agencies to carry out proper identification and verification before taking action or sharing unverified content online.
Call for Cooperation Between Police and the Public
The statement further emphasised the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies and citizens in maintaining peace and security.
“This incident highlights the challenges and sacrifices security personnel make daily in the discharge of their duties. It also underscores the importance of cooperation between the public and law enforcement agencies in promoting safety, preventing misinformation, and ensuring that innocent persons are not unjustly subjected to public condemnation,” the statement read.
Residents were advised to rely strictly on official and verified sources of information and avoid circulating unconfirmed reports capable of causing panic, damaging reputations, or escalating security tensions within communities.
A Close Call That Could Have Ended Differently
Authorities say the situation serves as a stark reminder of how quickly misunderstandings can escalate in an atmosphere of fear and insecurity. What began as a case of lost direction for two officers nearly turned into a violent confrontation, narrowly avoided through timely police intervention.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and maintaining order, while also calling for continued public awareness on the dangers of mob action and the spread of false information.
