NIPOST Begins Nationwide Digital Address System for Every Building in Nigeria
The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has officially commenced a nationwide digital postcode and address verification exercise aimed at assigning a unique address to every building across Nigeria, as part of efforts to modernize the country’s postal and delivery system.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, by the Postmaster General of NIPOST, Tola Odeyemi, during the launch of the project in Abuja, Abuja.
According to NIPOST, the project will create a digital postcode system that allows every house, office, and business location in Nigeria to have a unique machine-readable address for easier identification and faster service delivery.
The agency explained that the initiative became necessary because many areas in Nigeria currently lack proper address systems, creating difficulties for mail delivery, online shopping logistics, emergency services, and business operations.
Officials stated that the system will improve the speed and accuracy of parcel delivery, help companies involved in e-commerce locate customers faster, assist emergency agencies such as ambulances and fire services in finding exact locations, and strengthen Nigeria’s growing digital economy.
The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, said the digital postcode project is expected to be fully rolled out nationwide by October 2026 after the validation process is completed.
NIPOST said field officers have already begun visiting selected communities across the country to gather location data and verify addresses as part of the implementation process.
Citizens have been encouraged to cooperate with officials during the exercise as the project is expected to place Nigeria among the leading African.
