Ogun Teacher Arrested for Allegedly Killing 16-Year-Old WAEC Candidate After Fake Kidnapping Plot Turns Deadly
A 30-year-old private school teacher, Nathaniel Baiyegun, has been arrested by operatives of the Ogun State Police Command over the alleged killing of a 16-year-old West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) candidate identified as Florence, a former student he reportedly reconnected with after she left his school.
Security sources and police findings indicate that the suspect allegedly lured the teenager to her death under the pretext of enrolling her in an academic coaching programme. The incident, which has shocked residents of the community, is currently being treated as a case of kidnapping, extortion, and homicide by investigators of the Ogun State Police Command.
How the Victim Was Allegedly Lured
According to police sources, Baiyegun allegedly contacted Florence months after she left his former school and convinced her to resume academic coaching in preparation for her WAEC and UTME examinations.
Investigators said the teacher later persuaded her to visit an uncompleted building located behind his school premises, where she was allegedly held against her will.
The source further revealed that the suspect had also introduced a friend identified as “Sola” to the teenager, allegedly in connection with efforts to pressure her into a relationship, although she reportedly rejected the advances.
Alleged Kidnapping and Fake Ransom Plot
Police findings suggest that the situation escalated into a staged kidnapping plot. Baiyegun allegedly conspired—at least initially—to extort money from the victim’s family.
He was said to have used the victim’s phone to contact her father and demanded a ransom of ₦3 million, while she was being kept in the abandoned building.
However, the situation reportedly turned tragic when the suspect allegedly administered an overdose of D5 sleeping tablets to the teenager after she complained of fear and inability to sleep.
Investigators believe the drug overdose may have led to her death, although the suspect has claimed it was accidental.
Alleged Cover-Up and Body Disposal
Following the victim’s death or incapacitation, Baiyegun allegedly transported her body to a river in the Ogijo area and dumped it there.
Ogijo, where the body was reportedly abandoned, is now part of the ongoing investigation as police continue to search for forensic and physical evidence connected to the case.
He allegedly misled a commercial motorcyclist who assisted him, claiming he was taking the girl to a relative for treatment.
Confessional Statement and Suspect’s Account
In a confessional statement obtained by reporters, Baiyegun admitted knowing the victim but insisted there was no romantic or sexual relationship between them.
He explained that Florence had previously been his student in a broad sense but clarified that she was not in his direct class.
According to him, their relationship became strained after an incident involving a school power bank and a misunderstanding with school authorities, which led to him cutting off contact with her.
He further stated that they reconnected on April 7 while he was filming content in the community and that she approached him voluntarily.
The suspect claimed he later advised her to join his WAEC and JAMB coaching programme after she reportedly said she had failed key subjects in her previous examination.
Events Leading to the Incident
Baiyegun narrated that on April 8, he invited the victim to his school premises while she was at a coaching centre.
He alleged that he introduced her to his friend Sola, who had expressed interest in her, before leaving them briefly.
When he returned, he said Sola was no longer present and the girl allegedly complained about inappropriate demands made by the friend.
According to his statement, she later requested transport fare, which he said he did not have, and the situation escalated into what he described as a “fake kidnapping arrangement” intended to raise money from her family.
He admitted that he contacted the victim’s father and demanded ransom while she was being held in an uncompleted building.
Allegations of Drug Use, Death, and Confession
The suspect further claimed that he gave the victim four doses of sleeping tablets after she complained of fear and inability to rest.
He said he left her unattended and returned days later, only to find her gasping for breath.
Baiyegun stated that he attempted to move her for medical help but instead abandoned her body in a river after realizing she couldn't make it.
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the arrest and described the operation leading to the suspect’s capture as intelligence-driven.
Police spokespersons said operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit successfully tracked and arrested the suspect while recovering incriminating evidence connected to the case.
The command also commended the efforts of officers involved in the operation and assured the public that all individuals connected to the crime would be thoroughly investigated.
