“Don’t Fall for It”: Abia State Government Warns Residents About Fake N65,000 Birthday Giveaway Scam.
If you’ve seen a message popping up online claiming that Governor Alex Otti is giving away N65,000 to celebrate his 61st birthday, here’s what you need to know: It’s a scam. Don’t touch it.
The Abia State Government has issued a clear warning to the public to ignore a viral post circulating on social media. The message claims that the "Otti Foundation" is handing out N65,000 cash transfers to Nigerians as a birthday gift from the governor.
But according to Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, it’s all fake.
In a statement released on Tuesday, he explained that fraudsters are behind the scheme. The post reads: “Gov Alex Otti 61st Birthday Celebration Cash Transfer Gov Alex Otti Giving Out ₦65,000 to Nigerians… Powered by: Otti Foundation.”
Here’s the truth: There is no such program. The Abia State Government, the governor himself, and the official Alex Otti Foundation have absolutely nothing to do with this. They have not authorized any cash giveaway, birthday promotion, or N65,000 payment through any website or random link.
What’s really going on? These are phishing websites. They are cleverly designed to look legit, but their only goal is to steal your personal information. If you click the link and enter your details, you risk losing your bank information, BVN, OTPs, and even your money.
“Clicking the links or entering your details can lead to financial loss, identity theft, and unauthorized access to your bank and mobile money accounts,” Ukoha warned.
The government is urging everyone to do three things: ignore the message, avoid sharing it, and definitely don’t click any links. If you want to confirm any real government program, always check the official Abia State Government website or their verified social media handles.
Stay safe and don’t let the scammers win.
