ABAKALIKI — The road to the 2027 general elections in Ebonyi State is already being overshadowed by allegations of political violence, intimidation and attacks, with opposition members and journalists raising the alarm that the state’s democratic space may be shrinking ahead of the crucial polls.

Tensions escalated between August 1 and 6, 2026, following a series of reported incidents in Ezza South Local Government Area, where a planned Peoples Democratic Party defection rally was disrupted, suspected opposition supporters were allegedly attacked, and journalists covering the political event were reportedly assaulted.

The incidents have triggered condemnation from opposition political parties and the Nigeria Union of Journalists, with stakeholders demanding investigations, prosecution of alleged perpetrators and greater protection for political actors and media practitioners.

At the centre of the controversy is the allegation by Ifeanyi Nworie, a former chairman of the PDP in Ebonyi State who recently returned to the party after leaving it for the ruling All Progressives Congress following the 2023 elections.

Nworie had planned to formally rejoin the PDP at a ceremony expected to be attended by national and state leaders of the party at Idemba village square in Ezza South on Saturday, August 1.

But amid reported security concerns, he relocated the event to his residence at Ikwuator village, Idemba community.

According to Nworie, the change of venue did little to prevent the violence.

He alleged that more than 50 political thugs suspected to be supporters of the APC stormed the venue, disrupted the gathering, destroyed chairs, canopies and other property, and attacked people believed to be PDP members and supporters.

Nworie further alleged that police officers who were expected to provide security stood by while the attackers invaded the venue.

He said the development was particularly disturbing because he had formally written to the Ebonyi State Police Command on July 31, informing it of the event and requesting adequate security protection.

In the letter, Nworie warned of threats to his life and those of his supporters, as well as national and state PDP officials expected to attend the event.

He appealed to the police to deploy sufficient personnel to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

However, the police command rejected the allegation that officers abandoned the event.

The command’s spokesperson, Joshua Ukandu, said Nworie’s letter was received at about 3:03pm on July 31, but argued that the request did not provide sufficient details about the specific venue of the event.

Ukandu said Nworie did not subsequently contact the command to clarify the arrangements and that attempts by the police to reach him were unsuccessful.

He also stated that no police officer was present at Nworie’s residence when the alleged attack occurred, adding that videos circulating online supported the command’s position.

The controversy over the rally was followed by another disturbing allegation involving Blessing Ngwuta, a 40-year-old woman from Amaezekwe community in Ezza South.

Ngwuta alleged that armed men invaded her home while she was preparing food for visitors and attacked her husband, Christopher Ngwuta, a PDP member, as well as other people in the compound.

She claimed the attackers stole cash, mobile phones and motorcycles and damaged motorcycles and tricycles during the incident.

According to her, the situation became more frightening when the attackers allegedly entered the kitchen where she was preparing food.

Ngwuta alleged that one of the assailants struck her from behind, causing her to fall and hit her stomach against the ground, before another reportedly pointed a gun at her head and threatened her.

She was subsequently hospitalised and alleged that she suffered a miscarriage after the incident.

“I am not a politician. I don’t know anything about politics and I don’t belong to any political party. I don’t know my offence,” she said.

Her husband described the alleged attack as shameful, insisting that political affiliation should never make an individual or family a target of violence.

The allegations have intensified concerns about the political atmosphere in Ebonyi as parties begin to intensify preparations for the 2027 elections.

Social media commentator Nwoba Chika Nwoba had also alleged that the 13 local government chairmen in the state were directed by unnamed authorities to clamp down on opposition meetings as political activities increased.

The allegation has not been independently established.

Meanwhile, opposition parties have accused the ruling APC of creating an atmosphere of fear, allegations the party has strongly rejected.

The Ebonyi State APC Chairman, Stanley Okoro-Emegha, denied that the party or its members were behind the alleged attacks.

According to him, Governor Francis Nwifuru does not support political violence and would not tolerate APC members engaging in acts capable of threatening the peace of the state.

Okoro-Emegha said APC members understood that political disagreements were temporary and that political opponents could become allies in the future.

He therefore urged party members to avoid violence and conduct themselves peacefully.

But the Social Democratic Party Chairman in Ebonyi State, Kingsley Agbor, said the alleged harassment of opposition figures was not a new development.

Agbor claimed that the SDP had experienced intimidation for months and that his criticism of government policies had previously resulted in his removal from the Inter-Party Advisory Council platform and warnings from a government appointee.

He argued that opposition parties were essential to a functioning democracy because they provide checks and balances on those in power.

“Opposition is like the brakes of a vehicle. Without the brakes, there cannot be smooth movement,” he said.

Similarly, the senatorial candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress for Ebonyi Central, Prof. Benard Odoh, condemned the reported attacks, describing intimidation and violence against political opponents as incompatible with democracy.

Odoh said citizens must be able to participate in politics without fear and called on all stakeholders to reject political violence regardless of party affiliation.

The PDP in Ebonyi State also condemned the incidents and called on security agencies to protect citizens exercising their constitutional rights to freedom of association and political participation.

The party’s chairman, Igwe Chukwuma, urged its members to remain peaceful while calling on the state government and security agencies to ensure that political activities were conducted on a level playing field.

The PDP specifically appealed to the police, Department of State Services, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps and the armed forces to remain impartial in the discharge of their duties.

Journalists Become Another Target

The controversy took another dimension after the Ebonyi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists alleged that journalists covering the political event were attacked.

The union said about 10 journalists were allegedly assaulted by political thugs led by one Friday Agbom, who reportedly attempted to set fire to a branded NUJ bus conveying the journalists.

In a communiqué issued after an emergency meeting in Abakaliki, the union described the alleged attack as barbaric and unacceptable, particularly because the journalists were carrying out their professional duties.

The NUJ called on security agencies and the state government to identify and prosecute those responsible.

The union warned political parties and their supporters against harassing journalists, stressing that the safety of media practitioners was essential to the survival of democracy.

It further warned that continued attacks on journalists could force the union to boycott coverage of political activities involving any party found culpable.

A Warning Sign for 2027?

The developments have raised broader questions about the political environment in Ebonyi as the 2027 elections draw closer.

With political campaigns and mobilisation expected to intensify in the months ahead, stakeholders fear that unresolved allegations of violence, intimidation and attacks could discourage citizens from participating freely in political activities.

For opposition parties, the incidents are being presented as evidence of a narrowing democratic space. For the APC and the police, however, allegations of responsibility or inadequate security have been disputed.

What remains clear is that the conflicting accounts have created an atmosphere of suspicion at a time when political parties, security agencies, journalists and citizens are expected to work towards peaceful and credible elections.

As Ebonyi moves deeper into the 2027 electoral cycle, the ability of security agencies to investigate the allegations impartially, protect political gatherings and safeguard journalists could prove critical to restoring public confidence.

For many stakeholders, the warning is simple: if political disagreements are allowed to degenerate into violence and intimidation, the consequences could extend far beyond individual incidents and threaten the credibility of the entire electoral process.
