Edo Schools Reopen Monday After Security Scare Government Says It’s Now Safe.
After a tense week of lockdown caused by fears of terrorist attacks, schools in Edo State’s Akoko-Edo Local Government Area will officially reopen on Monday, June 15, 2026.
The state government had earlier shut down Ososo Grammar School, Ososo Comprehensive High School, and Makeke Secondary School following intelligence reports that suggested bandits were planning to abduct students. Security agents even reportedly intercepted communications about the plot and arrested a suspect lurking around Makeke Secondary School.
But on Friday, the government announced that things are now under control. According to a circular from the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Education, Enodolomwanyi Otamere, security agencies have reviewed the situation and confirmed that extra safety measures have been put in place across the affected communities and schools.
“We are satisfied that adequate arrangements now exist to protect learners, teachers, and non-teaching staff,” the circular read.
All public and private schools in the area are expected to resume normal academic and administrative activities from Monday. School heads and proprietors have been told to work closely with security agencies, community leaders, and government officials to keep the environment safe.
Parents and guardians are being encouraged to send their children back to school without fear. The government also assured that students who had to sit for their ongoing WAEC exams during the shutdown were allowed to do so under special security arrangements.
With this latest directive, normal life is expected to return to the classrooms in Akoko-Edo LGA by Monday morning.
