Fire Disaster Rocks Kano as Blaze Razes Shops, Offices Near Takumbo Market in Midnight Outbreak.

A devastating late-night fire on Thursday has destroyed multiple shops and offices along Murtala Mohammed Way in Kano State, leaving significant property losses after flames swept through a busy commercial corridor in the Fagge area.

The incident, which occurred near a branch of First City Monument Bank, reportedly began around 10:54 p.m. in a salvage yard popularly known as the Takumbo Market before rapidly spreading to adjoining buildings.

Fire broke out from salvage yard, spread rapidly

According to a statement released on Friday by the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, the service received a distress call from one of its personnel, HFS Ibrahim Sabo, alerting them to the outbreak.

Firefighters were immediately mobilised from the Service Headquarters and nearby metropolitan stations and deployed to the scene to contain the escalating blaze.

On arrival, emergency responders met a fierce inferno that had already engulfed a one-storey building and a large adjoining commercial area measuring approximately 300 by 200 feet, with flames spreading uncontrollably through shops and offices.

Extensive structural and commercial damage

Preliminary findings by the fire service indicated that the fire originated from the salvage yard, where large quantities of goods were stored. The flames quickly intensified and extended to nearby properties, causing widespread destruction.

Among the affected structures was the upper floor of the Kanawa Building, where two offices, two parlours, two toilets, and a kitchen were completely destroyed.

On the ground floor of TUSRAYS Nigeria Limited, two commercial stores were also severely damaged, with goods and equipment lost in the blaze.

Authorities attributed the cause of the fire to an electrical spark, though investigations are still ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

Firefighters prevent wider catastrophe

Despite the intensity of the blaze, firefighters were able to prevent it from spreading further into adjoining parts of the commercial district, potentially averting a larger disaster in the densely populated area of Fagge Local Government Area.

After several hours of coordinated effort, the fire was eventually brought under control.

No casualties recorded, safety warning issued

Fortunately, no loss of life or injuries were reported at the time of filing this report, although property worth millions of naira was believed to have been destroyed.

The Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, expressed concern over the incident and urged residents and business owners to adopt stricter safety measures to prevent similar disasters.

He emphasized the importance of proper electrical maintenance and vigilance in commercial areas.

“Members of the public should take all necessary precautions to prevent fire outbreaks. Electrical installations should be properly maintained and safety measures strictly observed,” he said.

Anas also stressed the importance of early reporting, noting that prompt alerts significantly improve response time and reduce damage.

“We appeal to the public to immediately alert the Fire Service whenever there is a fire outbreak. Early reporting helps to minimise damage and save lives and property,” he added.

Ongoing concerns over urban fire risks

The incident adds to growing concerns about recurring fire outbreaks in crowded commercial zones, particularly in areas with high volumes of stored goods and informal trading activities.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing to fully assess the extent of the damage and prevent future occurrences.
