He Kept on trying to explain but was killed on the spot: The full story behind Mene Ogidi's Death.
Mene Ogidi also known as Oghenemine Ogidi was a 28-year-old Nigerian. He hails from Urhobo ethnic group in the South-South geopolitical zone. Effurun, located near Warri.
This young man became the victim of a widely condemned extra judicial killing by the police officer ASP Nuhu Usman.
How it all started: Mene popularly known as OG by his family and friends. Told his sister that he wants to pick up a waybill for a friend. He also had issues with his phone so he made use of his mother's phone after recharging her phone. He dialed the number of the friend who asked him to pick up the parcel. Spoke to the friend and also received money from this friend before he left the house. He also called the attention of his sister to advise him on the right road to take so that he can save up the change from the transportation he received. “I told him to take a bus from the garage to the roundabout so that they will drop him by Sapele park. That was how he left.” Victory Ogidi shared this information at the News central tv interview that was conducted.
His mother clearly stated in the interview that this was not the first time she is losing her child because of the police men's wrong actions. According to the explanation given by Mene's sister. After everything she said happened he left the house to pick up the waybill. When he got to the Effurun main motor park along Sapele Road, where a parcel he was carrying was checked and found to contain a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition. Transport union members apprehend him. Both his hands and legs were tied up and immediately they contacted the police. This was the intelligent report the police officers got.
So officers from Effurun Area Command led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman arrived at the suspected crime scene. On seeing ASP Nuhu Usman, Mene knew the situation has escalated so he started shouting trying to explain himself as seen in the video. He started shouting saying things like “ it not my package, I can take you to the where he is.” The ASP took a gun and shot Mene on his leg. Mene was still struggling trying to explain himself when the ASP reloaded the gun and shot him again. The other police men stood there watching what the ASP was doing without a word. The ASP broke the law of the human rights. Also the laws that guides the police body bit they stood there and watched it all happen.
After this the body was dragged into the sienna the police officers came in and they drove off. Due to the fact that it was not stated in the interview if how the victim's family git to hear about this unfortunate turn out if events that claimed the life of their son any assumed possible way would not be included in this article.
The Nigerian police force condemned the act, calling it an “extra-judical killing" and a breach of Force order 237babd standard operating procedures. The ASP was immediately arrested removed from his post and transferred to the Firce Headquarters in Abuja fir investigation and prosecution..
But the question remind will this bring back Mene Ogidi? Will this comfort the family? A young man so full of life was killed in broad day light. If the video coverage was not brought to the notice of the public by Nigerin human right activist Harrison Gwamnshuhas would we be talking about this? He was caught with a weapon we all know that but this is not accepted as a means to retain a criminal. This is a violation of the human rights.
