In a disturbing incident out of Umuahia, the Abia State Police Command has arrested two young men for allegedly trying to snatch a two week old baby from her mother’s arms then attacking the woman with a kitchen knife when she fought back.

The suspects, Nzubechi Chinagorom, 24, and Chinonso Chibundu, 25, both from Olokoro in Umuahia South LGA, are facing charges of conspiracy, attempted child theft, and drug possession.

According to police spokesperson DSP Maureen Chinaka, the horrifying scene unfolded on May 25, 2026, at the home of a 32 year old woman named Amarachi Chinyereugo. The report says Chinagorom tried to forcefully take her newborn baby girl. When the mother resisted, a struggle broke out. He allegedly stabbed her with a kitchen knife, and during the chaos, the infant fell and hit her head on the ground.

Meanwhile, Chibundu reportedly stayed outside as a lookout.

After the victim raised an alarm, both suspects bolted. But their escape was short lived they were later caught at a nearby bus stop, where police say they were caught in the act of taking what’s believed to be hard drugs.

The good news: mother and child were rushed to the hospital, treated, and have since recovered.

The police have wrapped up their investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department, and the two suspects are set to appear in court on June 2.

The Abia State Police Command is urging residents to stay alert and report anything suspicious, adding that they remain committed to protecting lives and property.
