Nasarawa: Police warn politicians against premature campaigns

The Nasarawa State Police Command has warned politicians, support groups, and political parties against engaging in campaigns, rallies, and other political activities in violation of the Electoral Act following a recent clash between supporters of rival political aspirants in parts of the state.

The Command said the violent confrontation led to the destruction of property, vandalisation of campaign billboards, and damage to vehicles belonging to innocent residents, raising concerns over the potential threat to peace and public order.

In a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, the Commissioner of Police, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, cautioned political actors and their supporters to strictly adhere to the provisions of the Electoral Act regulating political campaigns.

According to the statement, Section 98(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, provides that political campaigns shall commence not earlier than 150 days before polling day and must end 24 hours before the election.

The Commissioner expressed concern over the activities of some political supporters, warning that their actions could undermine the peaceful atmosphere currently enjoyed across Nasarawa State.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains neutral and committed to providing a level playing field for all political actors while ensuring the protection of lives and property,” Mohammed said.

He urged all political parties, aspirants, support groups, and their agents to comply with the law governing the commencement and conduct of political campaigns, rallies, processions, meetings, and related activities.

The police chief further warned that individuals or groups found violating the Electoral Act, sponsoring political thuggery, engaging in unlawful political activities, or participating in acts capable of causing a breach of peace would be arrested and prosecuted.

He also called on parents, guardians, community leaders, and political stakeholders to caution their wards and supporters against violence, hooliganism, and political intolerance.

“The Command will not hesitate to deploy all lawful measures to maintain public order and safeguard residents from intimidation, harassment, or any form of disturbance,” he added.

The Nasarawa State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and security across the state and urged residents to remain law-abiding while reporting suspicious activities or threats to public peace to the nearest police formation.
