Agency Takes Proactive Steps to Protect Vulnerable Communities Ahead of Rainy Season

As Nigeria prepares for the 2026 rainy season, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has switched on its emergency response hub in a bid to stay ahead of potential flooding disasters.

The agency's Director General, Zubaida Umar, announced the activation of the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) during an inauguration meeting with team members in Abuja yesterday. The centre will serve as the nerve centre for coordinating flood response efforts nationwide.

Umar explained that the move is designed to improve how the agency collects, processes, and shares critical information about flood risks across the country. She urged her team to approach their work with professionalism and urgency, stressing that the information coming out of the centre must be accurate and delivered quickly.

"Timely access to reliable information is the difference between being prepared and being caught off guard," Umar told the gathering. "We need to ensure that communities at risk receive the right information at the right time to save lives and protect livelihoods."

The NEOC will focus on gathering real-time data and analysis to guide decision-making as the rainy season progresses. With flooding becoming an increasingly frequent challenge in many parts of the country, the agency is taking no chances this year.

Tony Ephraim, NEMA's Deputy Director of Planning, Research and Forecasting, assured the Director General that the team is ready to hit the ground running. He promised thorough monitoring, careful data collection, and efficient information management to support a coordinated emergency response.

The activation comes as Nigerians in flood-prone areas brace for what could be another challenging wet season. The agency's proactive stance reflects growing concerns about climate-induced disasters and the need for better preparedness across all levels of government.
