President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday unveiled a major wave of infrastructure development in Nasarawa State, inaugurating a newly completed 600-metre underpass and a 3.7-kilometre dualised township road network in Akwanga Local Government Area projects described as transformative for one of the state’s busiest transit corridors.

The President, represented at the event by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Nentawe Yilwatda, said the projects reflect the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises modern infrastructure, improved mobility, and economic expansion across Nigeria.

The projects, executed by the Nasarawa State Government under Governor Abdullahi Sule, are part of a broader urban renewal programme aimed at easing long-standing traffic congestion in Akwanga and improving inter-state connectivity between the North-Central and other regions.

Tinubu, speaking through his representative, recalled the severe traffic gridlock that once defined the town, especially during festive seasons when commuters could spend hours navigating the stretch now redesigned with modern infrastructure.

“Anybody who has seen this road before now knows how congested it used to be… The massive work you have done within a short period is admirable,” he said, commending the governor’s efforts not only in Akwanga but across other parts of the state, including Karu.

The underpass and dualised roads are expected to significantly reduce travel delays, improve road safety, and boost commercial activity in the growing township, which serves as a strategic link between Abuja and several northern states.

Funding Windfall Tied to Economic Reforms, Says Governor Sule

Governor Sule attributed the scale of ongoing infrastructure projects across Nasarawa to increased federal allocations made possible by recent economic reforms, including fuel subsidy removal and exchange rate unification.

According to him, the state’s monthly federal allocation has risen from about N3.5–N4 billion to between N13–N15 billion, enabling the government to embark on multiple road and urban development projects without borrowing.

“These reforms have made it possible for us to execute these projects across the state, and we will not relent until the end of our administration in 2027,” Sule said.

The governor also expressed confidence that Nasarawa residents would reward Tinubu’s administration with strong electoral support in 2027, citing the visible impact of federal and state projects.

Federal Government Flags Off 700km Superhighway Project

In a major highlight of the visit, President Tinubu also performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the ambitious 700-kilometre Akwanga Jos to Kaduna to Bauchi to Gombe to Biu Maiduguri Superhighway, a flagship transport corridor designed to improve connectivity across multiple northern states.

The first phase of the project, covering the 125-kilometre Akwanga, Jos stretch, forms a critical part of the Federal Government’s long-term road infrastructure expansion strategy.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, announced that the Federal Executive Council had approved N111 billion for the commencement of the project, which will be constructed using concrete pavement technology to enhance durability and reduce maintenance costs.

Umahi also praised the collaborative efforts of state governors across Nasarawa, Plateau, Kaduna, Bauchi, Gombe, and Borno, noting that their support was instrumental in ensuring smooth project takeoff.

Tinubu to Contractors: Be Development Partners, Not Just Builders

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, President Tinubu urged contractors handling the superhighway project to go beyond construction and act as development partners by engaging local communities.

“Please do not just be contractors; be development partners. Train our youths, transfer skills, create jobs in the communities,” he said, stressing the importance of local capacity development and employment creation.

A Growing Infrastructure Corridor in North-Central Nigeria

The twin events in Akwanga signal a broader push by both federal and state governments to reposition Nasarawa as a strategic transport and economic hub. With upgraded township roads, improved intercity connectivity, and a massive superhighway project underway, officials say the state is entering a new phase of development-driven growth.
