Tragedy on the Tracks: Three Dead as Warri–Itakpe Train Derails in Delta.

Fear and panic swept through Delta State on Monday after a passenger train operating along the Warri–Itakpe corridor derailed near Agbor, leaving at least three people dead and several others traumatised in one of the most disturbing rail incidents in recent times.

The tragic accident, which involved the Warri–Itakpe Train Service operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation, triggered an immediate emergency response as rescue officials, medical teams and security operatives rushed to the scene to evacuate passengers and assess the extent of the damage.

Confirming the incident, the Nigerian Railway Corporation said emergency response teams and relevant authorities were swiftly deployed to provide assistance to affected passengers and restore order at the scene.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NRC, Kayode Opeifa, said the corporation was closely monitoring the situation while investigations and rescue operations continued.

“The Nigerian Railway Corporation confirms that an incident involving the Warri–Itakpe Train Service occurred today. Emergency response teams and relevant authorities are currently at the scene attending to the situation and providing necessary assistance,” the statement read.

Opeifa assured the public that more information would be released as officials gather details surrounding the derailment.

“The corporation is closely monitoring developments and a detailed statement will be issued as soon as more information becomes available,” he added.

While the exact cause of the derailment had not been officially disclosed as of press time, the Presidency later confirmed that three passengers lost their lives in the accident.

In a statement shared via its official X handle, the Presidency disclosed that all passengers aboard the train had been accounted for following the emergency rescue operation.

“The Nigerian Railway Corporation has confirmed a serious train accident involving the Warri–Itakpe Train Service corridor at Agbor, Delta State. Rescue and emergency response operations were immediately activated. All passengers on board have now been accounted for.

“Sadly, three fatalities have been confirmed at this time. Relevant authorities continue to assess the full circumstances surrounding the incident, while support is being provided to affected passengers,” the statement noted.

The Presidency also urged Nigerians to rely only on verified information from official channels as investigations continue into the shocking incident.

The derailment has once again raised fresh concerns over railway safety and operational standards in the country, especially as the incident occurred barely one month after the Nigerian Railway Corporation temporarily suspended operations on the same Warri–Itakpe route.

At the time, the NRC explained that the temporary suspension was due to operational exigencies and technical recommendations from its engineers, stressing that the move was necessary to carry out critical safety assessments and improve service reliability along the corridor.

Monday’s tragedy is now likely to intensify public scrutiny over the condition of the rail infrastructure, maintenance culture and safety procedures guiding one of Nigeria’s busiest modern rail routes.

As grieving families mourn the victims, many Nigerians are demanding a thorough investigation into the cause of the derailment and urgent reforms to prevent future rail disasters.
