Trump’s Name Comes Off the Kennedy Center And Some Cheered.
After a tense back and forth in court and a last minute scramble because of thunderstorms, the Kennedy Center finally removed Donald Trump’s name from its building early Saturday morning.
Workers used scaffolding and a tarp to hide the process, but by just after 3 a.m., video showed them picking away at the letters. By noon, the job was done. The move follows a judge’s ruling that gave the center until Saturday at noon to take Trump’s name off its walls, website, and other materials.
For a while, the center had tried to delay, saying bad weather and legal appeals should buy them more time. But an appeals court rejected that effort Friday night. One judge on the panel was a Trump appointee.
Small crowds gathered outside as the name came down. One woman, JoAnn Jones, said she felt “disgust” when Trump’s name first went up. Another man took a selfie with his fingers crossed. A few protesters even brought champagne.
“When a person wants to put their name on a building you had nothing to do with… you just don’t deserve it,” Jones said.
The name had only been added in December after Trump’s new handpicked board voted to honor him. That move drew criticism from the Kennedy family and sparked a legal battle.
Even as workers removed the sign, the fight isn’t over. The Trump administration is still appealing, arguing that private donors might demand hundreds of millions of dollars back if the name stays off. Meanwhile, Ohio Rep. Joyce Beatty, who led the challenge, was spotted dancing in celebration.
Ironically, as Trump headed to his Virginia golf course Saturday, his motorcade drove right past the Kennedy Center.
