‘Unsurvivable’ Nightmare: 8 Dead After B-52 Bomber Crashes Minutes After Takeoff..

At California’s Edwards Air Force Base, a routine test mission turned into a devastating tragedy Monday morning. A B-52 bomber crashed just after takeoff, killing all eight people on board.

The base called it the deadliest B-52 crash since 1982, describing the scene as “tragic and unsurvivable.”

The plane went down around 11:20 a.m. local time, leaving a massive black plume of smoke and a long, black scar on the sandy runway. Emergency crews rushed in, but it was immediately clear there were no survivors.

Among the dead were military crew members, government civilians, and contractors including two Boeing employees. Officials spent the next several hours notifying heartbroken families.

The flight was part of a radar modernization test, a routine but high stakes mission at a base known for pushing aircraft to their limits. “If it flies, it’s tested at Edwards,” one retired Navy commander said, noting that the crews there are among the best in the world.

The B-52 is a Cold War era workhorse that first entered service in 1955. While it’s been upgraded for decades, the plane hasn’t been built since 1962. That means any replacement will have to come from a “boneyard” in Arizona.

Investigators have already begun combing through wreckage and maintenance records, but officials warned that the full story of what went wrong won’t be released for about six months.

Operations at the base are paused through Tuesday. For now, it’s a recovery mission and a painful loss for the Air Force community.
