Finally: U.S. Approves a Safer Sunscreen Ingredient That’s Been Protecting Europe and Asia for Years.

After 20 long years, the FDA just approved a new sunscreen ingredient called bemotrizinol (BEMT). It’s already been used safely in Europe and Asia for decades, but now it’s finally coming to the U.S.

Why does that matter? Because many chemical sunscreens on American shelves today don’t offer great protection against UVA rays the kind that cause premature aging, suppress your immune system, and are a big driver of skin cancer. One study found U.S. sunscreens deliver only about 24% of the UVA protection their SPF labels suggest.

BEMT is different. It’s highly stable in heat (won’t break down on your skin in the summer sun), doesn’t absorb easily into your bloodstream, and pairs well with zinc oxide to give you strong broad-spectrum protection without leaving a ghostly white cast.

For context, back in 2019, the FDA found that six common sunscreen chemicals could enter your bloodstream at unsafe levels after just one day of use. Two of them homosalate and oxybenzone stuck around for more than two weeks. So having a safer, effective option is a big deal.

As one scientist put it: “Americans have been using outdated sunscreen tech while the rest of the world moved forward. This is a win that’s been a long time coming.”
