Party Turns to Chaos: Over 400 Arrested as PSG Victory Celebrations Erupt in Violence Across France.
What started as a night of triumph for Paris Saint-Germain fans quickly spiraled into chaos across France. After PSG beat Arsenal to win the Champions League, more than 400 people ended up in handcuffs 280 of them right in Paris.
Thousands of excited supporters flooded the Champs-Élysées and gathered around the Parc des Princes stadium to celebrate the historic win. For the most part, the mood was joyful. But as fireworks and flares lit up the sky, things took a dark turn. Clashes broke out between some fans and police, leaving seven officers injured. Several cars, shops, and public buildings were also damaged.
France’s Interior Minister, Laurent Nuñez, didn’t hold back, calling the violence “absolutely unacceptable.” Police had to use tear gas in central Paris to break up the crowds after some supporters started trashing property and going after security forces.
Videos shared online showed burning cars, shattered storefronts, and flares flying through the smoke filled streets.
The backlash came swiftly. Far right politician Marine Le Pen fired off a sharp post on X, saying: “Only in France does a football club’s victory spark riots. Only in France does everyone feel forced to lock themselves inside on the night of a win just to stay safe.”
The ugly scenes feel like an echo of last year, when PSG’s previous European win ended in tragedy two people lost their lives, including a 17 year old boy.
Still, the official victory celebrations are moving ahead as planned on Sunday. PSG’s players will take part in a parade near the Eiffel Tower, followed by a reception hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron.
