PDP Faction Led by Abdulrahman Mohammed Declares Senator Sandy Onor as Consensus Presidential Candidate for 2027 Elections.
Abuja, FCT – With less than two years until the 2027 general elections, the faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to Abdulrahman Mohammed has formally unveiled Senator Sandy Onor, the former Cross River State governorship candidate, as its consensus presidential candidate.
This development comes amid the party’s protracted and multi-layered crisis, which has plagued the PDP since the fallout from its 2022 presidential primary. According to reports from Legit.ng, the prolonged internal turmoil has significantly weakened Nigeria’s main opposition party, leading to parallel structures and rival claims to leadership.
The announcement of Senator Onor’s candidacy was made on Tuesday, May 26, during a formal collation and presentation of the faction’s presidential primary results. The event took place at the PDP’s Wadata Plaza national secretariat in Abuja and was presided over by the chairman of the faction’s presidential primaries collation committee, former Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom.
Ortom, who is known to be an ally of Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), explained that the exercise followed extensive consultations and voice votes conducted among party members across the 36 states of the federation. According to him, the committee had engaged with grassroots party stakeholders before arriving at a consensus decision.
Senator Onor reportedly emerged as the sole presidential aspirant after declaring his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election earlier this month. He had also obtained his expression of interest and nomination forms prior to the faction’s announcement.
During the event, Ortom officially presented Senator Onor as the consensus presidential candidate, urging party members to rally behind him. The exercise was monitored by National Commissioners of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), including Abdullahi Zuru and Professor Rhoda Habor Gumus, alongside other senior officials of the electoral body.
The faction’s move adds another layer of complexity to the PDP’s ongoing leadership crisis, as the party also has other recognized leadership structures ahead of the 2027 elections.
