TINUBU REPLACES WALE EDUN AS FINANCE MINISTER IN CABINET RESHUFFLE
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has removed Wale Edun as Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, appointing Taiwo Oyedele as his successor in a cabinet reshuffle announced on April 21, 2026.
According to an official statement from the presidency, the reshuffle is aimed at improving coordination within government ministries and delivering stronger economic results under the administration’s “Renewed Hope Agenda.” The changes also included the removal of Housing Minister Ahmed Musa Dangiwa.
Edun’s exit comes after mounting criticism over the pace of budget implementation and the country’s broader fiscal management. Reports in recent months questioned delays in capital expenditure despite significant budgetary approvals. Concerns were also raised about Nigeria’s rising debt-service burden and continued pressure on public finances.
During his tenure, Edun defended the government’s reform agenda, arguing that difficult measures such as subsidy removal, tax reforms, and tighter fiscal controls were necessary to stabilise the economy. He also highlighted improved oil production and stronger revenues as signs of progress.
His replacement, Taiwo Oyedele, is widely known for his work in tax policy and economic reform. Analysts are expected to watch closely to see whether his appointment signals a stronger push for revenue generation, faster budget execution, and renewed investor confidence in Africa’s largest economy.
Nigeria continues to face major economic challenges, including inflation, currency volatility, unemployment, and pressure on household incomes. With the 2027 elections approaching, the success or failure of the new economic team could have major political and economic consequences for the Tinubu administration.
