What Feminist Actually Means To Me
What Feminism Actually Means to Me: A Guide to Gender Equality and Women Empowerment
Feminism is one word that people misunderstand a lot — especially here in Nigeria.
The moment you say I’m a feminist,” some people assume you hate men, you want to dominate, or you’re trying to be something “too much.”
But that’s not my story.
In My Own Point Of View......
Feminism, is not about fighting men. It's about gender equality, women empowerment, and helping every girl understand her worth.
What Is Feminism? : In General Term
Feminism is the belief that women and men should have equal rights, equal opportunities, and equal respect.
It’s not about competition
It’s about fairness
Scholars like Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie states that
feminism is simply about equality — and that both men and women benefit from it.
That is exactly the kind of feminism I believe in.
Feminism in Nigeria:Why It Matters for the Girl Child
In many Nigerian homes, girls are still raised differently from boys.
A girl is often taught to: be quiet, adjust, depend on others, prepare mainly for marriage
While a boy is encouraged to:
explore, lead, take risks, build independence etc
This difference affects confidence and opportunities.
feminism means changing that mindset. Letting every girl child know that her education, her dreams and her voice matters and needs to be heard.
This idea is also reflected in the work of Bell Hooks, who described feminism as "a movement to end limitations placed on women".
Feminism;
Is not About Hating Men
I do not hate men.
I believe in respect.
I believe in partnership.
I believe men and women can grow together.
But I also believe women should not be:
silenced
underestimated
or limited because of their gender
So my feminism is about correcting imbalance and creating space for women to grow.
Women Empowerment and Self-Worth
Another important part of feminism, for me, is self-worth.
It’s not just about rights — it’s about mindset.
Women Empowerment;
knowing your value
setting standards
building skills
making independent decisions
How to Practice Feminism in Your Everyday Life;
If you’re trying to understand feminism in a practical way, here are simple things that reflect what it means to me:
- Support girls’ education and personal growth
- Encourage women to learn skills and become independent
- Respect women’s opinions and voices
- Stop normalizing gender-based limitations
- See men and women as partners, not competitors
Feminism Is About Growth, Not Perfection
Feminism is not about being perfect or always getting it right.
It’s about growth.
It’s about becoming more aware, more confident, and more intentional about your life.
Some days you’ll feel strong.
Some days you won’t.
But what matters is that you keep growing.
Conclusion
So, when I say I believe in feminism, this is what I mean:
- I believe in equality.
- I believe in empowerment.
- I believe in growth.
And most importantly,
- I believe every girl deserves the chance to become the best version of herself — without limitations.
