Dickson Moves to Resolve Kano NDC Primaries Crisis After Meeting Kwankwaso Loyalists

As tensions continue to simmer within the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the completion of its nomination process, the party's national leader, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, has stepped into the center of a growing dispute in Kano State.

In a move aimed at preventing further divisions, Dickson held a closed-door meeting with leaders of the influential Kwankwasiyya Movement and senior party officials to address disagreements surrounding the conduct of the party's primary elections in the state.

The meeting comes at a critical moment for the party as it seeks to maintain unity ahead of future electoral contests.

The high-level meeting took place on Monday night and lasted several hours, bringing together members of the NDC national leadership and representatives of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, a political bloc loyal to former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

At the heart of the discussions were concerns raised over the party's primary election process in Kano State. The disagreements reportedly involve members of the Kwankwasiyya bloc and long-standing party officials, both of whom have expressed differing views on the management of the nomination exercise.

According to a statement issued by the party's National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the intervention by the national leadership was intended to ensure fairness, inclusiveness, and transparency throughout the process.

The statement emphasized that the party leadership was committed to carrying all stakeholders along and preventing any group from feeling excluded from the decision-making process.

"The NDC leadership is mediating in the process in order to enhance inclusion and participation by every party member," the statement said.

It further stressed that the party would not impose candidates in Kano State or any other part of the country, insisting that internal democracy remains a core principle of the organization.

Party officials described the discussions as productive and constructive, expressing confidence that ongoing consultations would eventually lead to a resolution acceptable to all parties involved.

While details of the closed-door meeting were not publicly disclosed, insiders suggested that efforts were focused on preventing the dispute from escalating into a wider internal crisis capable of weakening the party's position in one of Nigeria's most politically significant states.

Adding another layer to the situation, the NDC leadership also used the opportunity to address reports circulating on social media regarding alleged primary election results.

The party firmly denied claims that official results had already been released in any state across the federation.

According to the statement, all lists and results currently being shared online are unauthorized and should be disregarded by members of the public and party supporters.

"The NDC has not released any official results of its primary elections in any state. Therefore, members and the public should ignore any list currently in circulation," the statement added.

Kano State remains one of Nigeria's most influential political battlegrounds, making any dispute within a major political party a matter of national interest.

The Kwankwasiyya Movement commands a large support base in the state and has played a significant role in shaping political outcomes over the years. As a result, any disagreement involving the bloc carries implications for party cohesion and electoral strength.

Political analysts have repeatedly warned that unresolved disputes during primary elections often create lasting divisions, leading to defections, parallel structures, and weakened campaign efforts during general elections.

The NDC leadership's intervention appears designed to avoid such a scenario by promoting dialogue before the nomination process reaches its final stages.

With political interests intensifying ahead of key electoral activities, the NDC faces the delicate task of balancing competing interests while preserving party unity.

Dickson's engagement with Kwankwaso loyalists signals a determination by the party leadership to resolve disagreements through consultation rather than confrontation. Whether the ongoing talks will fully bridge existing divisions remains uncertain, but for now, the party appears focused on preventing a local dispute from becoming a national political challenge.
