House Drama Ends: Ugochinyere Steps Aside, Agbedi Takes Over as Minority Leader.
After weeks of back and.forth and political tension, the House of Representatives finally has a new Minority Leader.
The logjam broke yesterday when Hon. Frederick Agbedi was officially recognized for the role. This happened only after his main rival, Ikenga Ugochinyere, made a surprise move he withdrew his claim to the position, citing respect for the House rules.
For context, this power tussle began when the former Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, left for the ruling APC. Ugochinyere had the backing of most opposition lawmakers 61 out of 81 and initially looked set to take the seat. However, the House leadership stuck to a different interpretation of the rules.
During plenary, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas read out a formal communication from the minority parties nominating their new principal officers. That’s when Agbedi’s name came up, alongside Abdulsamad Dasuki as Deputy Minority Leader and Mansur Manu Soro as Minority Whip.
Shortly before that, Ugochinyere had sent a letter to the Speaker, stating that he was stepping aside for the sake of order and the amended House rules, even though he had the numbers.
With that, the dispute that had tested the unity of the opposition caucus came to an end. Speaker Abbas congratulated the new officers and promised the House leadership’s support in getting the legislature’s work done.
