VAR Storm Erupts After Haaland’s Controversial Winner in Manchester Derby

A major refereeing controversy has erupted following Manchester City’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Manchester derby, after Premier League refereeing chief Howard Webb admitted that VAR officials made a critical error in allowing Erling Haaland’s winning goal to stand.

Haaland’s decisive strike at Old Trafford was initially ruled out for offside before the decision was overturned following a VAR review. However, Pro Ref, the body responsible for professional refereeing in English football, has now acknowledged that the goal should not have been allowed.

According to Webb, the VAR team became focused on determining whether Haaland himself was offside and failed to properly assess the involvement of Manchester City midfielder Enzo Fernandez in the build-up.

Fernandez was in an offside position and attempted to play the ball. Although he did not make contact with it, his movement was considered relevant to the play because he was involved in the attacking action and affected Manchester United defenders.

Webb described the mistake as “tunnel vision”, explaining that the officials concentrated on Haaland’s position while failing to consider the wider circumstances surrounding the goal.

The admission has intensified debate surrounding VAR and its role in Premier League football, particularly because the decision directly influenced the outcome of one of English football’s biggest fixtures.

The controversy has also led to action against the officials involved. VAR official Matt Donohue and assistant VAR Blake Antrobus have been stood down from Premier League duty following the error and are not expected to return until after the international break.

Manchester United were left frustrated by the decision after suffering a 1-0 defeat despite City being reduced to 10 men following Phil Foden’s dismissal.

Webb also addressed the Foden incident, backing the decision to send the Manchester City midfielder off for violent conduct. However, he acknowledged that United captain Bruno Fernandes should have received a yellow card for the kick that preceded the confrontation, although VAR could not intervene because of the limitations surrounding the incident.

For Manchester City, Haaland’s goal secured three points in a fiercely contested derby. For United, however, the controversial decision has added another layer of frustration to a difficult start to the Premier League campaign.

The incident is likely to keep the debate over VAR, offside interpretation and refereeing consistency alive long after the Manchester derby has ended.
